If that was the case, why did she not warn him about the glue before he sat down?
“Shh…” She placed a finger on her lips. “I’d advise you to keep quiet. If you attract any attention…” She trailed off
right there, but she made herself clear. It would be embarrassing if word got out about his predicament. How funny
would it be to hear that the Mr. Yeager was glued to the stool?
“Ethan, I guess Alice is only discussing stuff with Bruce. Yes, that must be it. They must be discussing Woland
Group.” Irvin helped Alice out, mostly because he could not stand the hostility coming from Ethan, but even he
believed that he sounded unconfident.
From their direction, they did not have a full view of Bruce’s face or a clear idea of the conversation between the
two. However, they witnessed the wide grin on Alice’s face that was hard to miss. Ethan’s eyes looked calm, but
upon closer look, one would detect the threatening air.
Irvin let out a sigh in secret and held his tongue. The situation seems bad!
On the second floor, Bruce gritted his teeth, seething with resentment. He was stunned to see the smile on her
face. “Alice, you did this on purpose.”
“Yes, I did.” She admitted to it without hesitation. She would always own her actions, and her confession was bold
and direct.
“You—” He was surprised by her honest confession. The calm look on her face almost made him choke on anger.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtSuddenly, he thought of a question. “How did you know I was coming over? And how did you know I’d sit on this
stool?”
She gave him a look. “Well, you’re sitting on it now, aren’t you?”
Speechless, he looked at her with complex emotions. It seemed that she had purposely behaved suspiciously to lure
him over… No, that was wrong. She wanted to get Emma to approach her, but he confronted her on Emma’s
behalf.
It crossed his mind that her previous offer of the Coke was an attempt to test his complicity. He believed she would
have warned him about the stool with glue if he were in the dark about Emma’s plan. Too bad he knew all along and
chose to side with Emma. Therefore, Alice deliberately watched on as he took his seat.
Still, Alice’s change puzzled him—she was dumb and slow, so how could she have pulled this off? Did she find out
about Emma’s plan from the start? How did she learn to be shrewd in the span of a few days? Impossible! That was
impossible!
He then recalled her conversation with Mr. Hampton and assumed that Mr. Hampton could have suggested the
revenge plan to her.
“Oh, Bruce, here you are! Lester Hammond has arrived. Do you want to meet him?” Emma’s words distracted him.
The real reason she came to him was to get some clues about Alice’s behavior. Moreover, she also hated seeing
any interactions between Bruce and Alice.
Her original plan was to ruin the engagement between them. That way, she could marry Bruce! They had been in
contact over the years, and he was one of her candidates for marriage.
That was right—he was merely one of her many targets. She had been in touch with a few heirs over the years to
pick the best candidate and marry into wealth.
“I won’t go to him. I’ll sit here for a while.” Bruce was physically unable to leave but was too embarrassed to explain
his situation. He was burning with anxiety and helplessness.
“Bruce?” Emma was taken aback by his rejection. In these few years, he had never turned her down. He even
promised to marry her once he tied up the loose ends with Alice.
On top of that, he had always dreamed of forging a connection with Mr. Hammond, and he once asked Emma to
introduce Lester to him. It did not make sense for him to turn down the opportunity!
Yet, he did. Why did he refuse to meet Lester, and why did he choose to stay?
Alice glanced at Emma and turned to Bruce. She told him intentionally, “You don’t have to keep me company here.”
She even emphasized that he did not have to do so, raising her voice so that Emma could hear.
However, Ethan, too, overheard her and scrunched his eyes as his expression turned grimmer. Of course, Alice was
in the dark; the remark was intended for Emma, after all.
She knew that Emma would approach her at some point, but she did not anticipate Emma to show up in such a
short time. Since Emma had arrived, she decided it was time for the show. She was never vindictive, for she always

Bruce drew a sharp breath and glared at Alice. Keep you company? You like to make bold statements, don’t you?
He would never stay back to keep her company, given how dumb and unattractive she was. Sadly, he was unable to
retort because the best rebuttal was to leave, but leaving was a luxury he could not afford at that moment.
“Bruce, Mr. Hammond seems to have something to say to you. It could be business-related.” Emma was burning in
resentment but kept her composure. She maintained a smile on her face as she spoke softly to him.
“Yeah. Your business is more important. Mr. Yeager, you should tend to your business,” Alice spoke before Bruce
had a chance to reply.
Emma had thought that Bruce was unwilling to leave. Therefore, she tried to coax him with business discussions as
an excuse. Little did she know that Bruce was unable—not unwilling—to move. No matter what she said to him, he
would not move an inch.
He glared at Alice but froze when he saw her bright smile. Suddenly, he seemed to think that she was not as
unattractive as he thought; she even seemed good-looking.
Good heavens! Bruce sank into silence, perhaps because he was out of his mind or simply at a loss for words.
At that time, someone noticed the commotion around the bar. A hush fell across the main hall as the guests
diverted their attention to the trio.
“What’s going on? I thought Bruce and Alice’s engagement didn’t work out. Is he going back to her?”
“It’s hard to tell, but Miss Woland looks like she’s still in love with him. He’d stand a chance to get back with her.”
“But it depends on him, right? If he doesn’t like her, it doesn’t matter if she throws herself at him.
