Clair invited Scarlett to accompany him to receive guests at such a momentous event. The wise people all could see what Clair meant. Coupled with the fact that Clair had expressed his appreciation for Scarlett i n the last interview, no one believed Clair wasn't into Scarlett.
But Clair hadn't had an affair with any woman for 20 years after his wife's death. Besides, he was old enough to be Scarlett's father, so even if he did take a fancy to Scarlett, it wasn't for himself but his son.
Henry was thirty-two years old, and Clair treated Scarlett like his future daughter-in-law. Like other parents, the older Clair got, the more eager he was for Henry to marry as soon as possible.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtAlexander glanced at Raymond subconsciously when he saw Scarlett and Clair appear together, "Ray, did Clair really intend Scarlett to be his daughter-in-law?" Hardly had he finished than Raymond's face clouded over with anger.
Scarlett and Henry's photos swept the Intebefore they boarded the plane. And those photos were taken from a deft angle as if they were a real couple. Even Alexander couldn't tell true from false! Raymond was in a bad mood the whole way. Even worse, as soon as he made his entrance, he saw Clair getting out of the elevator with Scarlett.
Clair had stated his appreciation for Scarlett in the previous interview, and with such special treatment, Raymond understood what Clair was getting at.
As Clair's son, Henry was busy greeting guests in his father's place. And he didn't relieve until Clair showed up.
He then led several uncles to Clair.
And these men's eyes fell on Scarlett after giving Clair birthday greetings. Someone half jested, "Is this lady Henry's girlfriend, Clair?" Clair took a glance at Henry and chuckled, "I hope so. But Henry wasn't living up to my expectation!" Although Henry did not inherit Clair's devotion to love, he did inherit EQ and IQ. As soon as Clair finished, he got his meaning. He gave Scarlett a meaningful look and half jested, "See, my dad really likes you. So, would you consider being my girlfriend, Scarlett?" It was not until Clair and Henry worked together to test her that Scarlett got Clair's intention.
She met Henry's eyes and smiled faintly, "I'm afraid not. My parents’ dying wish was to keepfrom marrying far away." This question put Scarlett in a slightly awkward position.
Clair just wanted to test Scarlett, not to put pressure o n her on such an occasion.

That was really a brilliant excuse! Who knew whether the so-called dying wish was true or false? Scarlett's refusal did not embarrass the Andersons or herself.
Henry shrugged, "Oh, that's a pity. It doesn't like we were meant to be." Scarlett gave a faint smile and acquiesced to Henry's statement.
The person who asked the question regretted asking it because it might offend Scarlett and the Andersons. H e didn't really wonder the answer, but he just asked it on a whim.
This touchy topic ended in jest. People who could be invited to such events were naturally sensible, thus the others no longer bothered Scarlett.
These men made Scarlett the center of attention in a few words.
Then Clair walked away with those men, and Henry gave Scarlett a glass of juice, "Please don't take it to heart, Scarlett. It was just a joke." Scarlett took the glass from him and sipped it, "I know you're not serious, Mr. Anderson."
