Alex glanced at him but didn’t reply. Unscrewing a bottle of painkillers, he popped two pills into his mouth and
swallowed them dry.
For the next three or four days, Alex didn’t contact Ellie.
After work, Ellie returned to Zerikith, noticing Alex's consistent daily messages. She didn’t reply. When he
needed her, he was all over her, but now? Nowhere to be found.
Then Nalani called, asking Ellie to meet her at the Earl Hotel.
“Mommy!”
Ellie rarely got to see her two kids. Hugging them tightly, she couldn't bear to let go.
In the private room, Nalani, Ellie, and the kids chatted. Nalani asked, “How's Alex recovering?”
Seeing Ellie's puzzled expression, Nalani set down her pastry. “You don’t know? Alex was seriously injured”
Ellie lowered her gaze to hide her emotions, ‘So that’s why he disappeared these past few days.
“I heard from my husband that Alex tracked down the people following you. He got surrounded by their elite
fighters,” Nalani explained.
Ellie quietly listened to Nalani recount Alex's recent activities.
For safety reasons, Ellie decided not to bring the kids back to Zerikith and had Whitney pick them up instead
Returning halone, Ellie hesitated for a moment before knocking on Alex's door.
“Dr. Thompson,” Barry greeted as he opened the door, letting her in.

Ellie’s sharp senses as a doctor picked up a faint metallic scent in the living room.
She frowned and asked Barry, “Where's Alex?”
Barry pointed to the bedroom. “He just lay down.”
As Ellie headed to the bedroom, Barry quickly made himself scarce.
After days of sleeping on the sofa, Alex finally gave in. Ignoring his still-healing wound, he took a shower and
collapsed onto his bed. “So comfy!”
Draped in just a white robe, Alex sprawled out, hugging a small floral blanket he'd swiped from Ellie's car.
Standing in the doorway, Ellie caught sight of him looking ridiculously content, clutching her blanket.
“How's the wound?” Ellie asked as she walked over and yanked the blanket from his hands.
Seeing her, Alex instinctively tried to sit up, only to tug at his wound. Grimacing, he leaned his head against her
shoulder, breathing heavily. Sitting at the edge of the bed, he wrapped his arms around her waist. “Who told you
I was hurt?”
Gently pushing him away, Ellie knelt on one knee by the bed.
Their eyes met, and Ellie suddenly said, “Should | stay tonight?”

softly, “Not mad anymore.”

rest for a couple more days. If you wearout again, | might not survive. If you don’t ‘feed’properly, | can’t
sleep at night!”
Ellie smiled mischievously, her gaze teasing as she slowly reached for the belt of his robe.
