The call cjust as | was leaving practice.
"Mr. Saunders?"
"Yeah, this is him." | balanced my duffel on my shoulder, pushing open the car door.
"This is Officer Ruiz with the Austin PD. We have a woman in custody, Vivien, who listed you as her emergency
contact."
| stopped mid-motion, gripping the door frame. "What?"
"She was picked up outside a coffee shop after causing a scene. Barista called it in-said she was aggressively
confronting a blonde woman, screaming at her." The officer
hesitated. "She's requesting that you cdown to the station."
| clenched my jaw so tight | thought my teeth might crack.
"What does she want from me?"
"She's insisting that you validate her story. That she's not crazy."
| scrubbed a hand down my face. "Jesus Christ."
The drive to the station was a blur of anger and disbelief. | knew Vivien was struggling, but this? It was unhinged.

"She's in here," the officer said, stopping in front of the cell.
Vivien was pacing. Back and forth, her arms folded tightly over her stomach. Her usually perfect raven hair was a
mess, her makeup smudged like she had been crying for hours.
When | stepped inside, she froze. Her red-rimmed eyes snapped to mine, her face crumpling into desperate
relief.
"Josh!" She lunged forward, stopping just short of the bars. "Tell them. Tell them I'm not crazy. That we love each
other! That we're supposed to be a family!" Her voice cracked, her hands gripping the cold metal. | exhaled
sharply, fighting the heat rising in my chest. "Vivien, what the hell is this?"
Her fingers curled tighter, her whole body shaking. "I worked so hard for us. Don't you see that?" Her voice grew
frantic. "You just have to tell them, Josh! Tell them it's not made up! That | didn't make this up!" A thick silence
stretched between us.
"What do you mean, you worked hard?" My voice was low, sharp.
Vivien started pacing again, her breaths erratic.
The officer besideshifted uncomfortably, just as confused
as | was.
Then Vivien stopped.
She lifted her head, her dark eyes glistening with something unhinged.

"Don't you recognize me?" she whispered.
A chill slid down my spine.
"What?"
"I was there." A breathy laugh escaped her lips. "I was the nurse."
The world tilted for a second.
No.
No, that wasn't possible.
"I was there," she continued, her voice eerily calm now. "Of course, you didn't see me, but | was always in the
background. Listening to you talk to her while | knew she wasn't really there. She wasn't coming back to you."
My stomach lurched. "Vivien... what the fuck are you saying?"
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtShe took a step closer to the bars, a twisted smile on her lips.
"She wasn't strong enough." She exhaled shakily, her eyes darting around like she was lost in a memory. "Sure,
sure... | gave her a little sedation at the beginning. Just to make sure she didn't wake up. But that was only once
to twice... think." She nodded frantically. "Only that one dose almost stopped her breathing, so | didn't do it
again," Her voice softened, almost dreamy. "But after that... she just stayed asleep on her own."
My blood turned ice cold.
My hands curled into fists at my sides, rage boiling under my skin.

"You-" | swallowed hard, my voice like gravel. "You drugged her?"
Vivien's lips parted, her face slack with realization.
"I heard you," she whispered, ignoring my question. "I heard you tell your sister you were thinking about moving
to Texas. Sol did the research, found the right school, got the job-" She let out a small, breathy laugh. "It was
perfect." Perfect.
She had stalked me. Manipulated her way into my life. Into my daughter's life.
She had kept Laura in a coma.
My whole body tensed, every muscle coiling like a live wire. | forced myself to stay still, to not grab the bars and
shake them until they rattled.
Vivien smiled like this was skind of victory. "She never should have woken up."
| stepped forward, my voice shaking with barely contained fury. "Vivien-look at me."
She did.
And | let her see every ounce of rage burning in my eyes.
"If I find out you hurt my wife," | said, my voice deadly quiet, "hearnow-| will make sure you never see the

Vivien's smile faltered.

Then | turned.
And | walked away.
Vivien's voice cracked behind me, raw and desperate.
"Josh!"

"Josh, please!"
| kept walking.
"We belong together!"
| shoved through the doors, my heart pounding so hard it felt like it might break my ribs.

Chapter 1: My Boyfriend's Getting Married, and It's Not to Me
"Mr. Sullivan, | agree to marry you."
Before making the call, Sonya Ella downed half a bottle of vodka, the kind that burned going
down.
There was silence at the other end. Then, she heard a gravelly voice laced with undisguised irritation. Clearly, he
was roused from sleep.
"Do
to you have any
idea what tit is?"
Sonya hadn't checked. She glanced at her phone. It was 2:30 AM.
"Sorry, I'll call you tomorrow."
"Okay."
"Huh?"
"But I'm leaving for a business trip overseas tomorrow. I'll be back in about a month. We'll married then." 'Fine."
Hanging up, Sonya felt dazed.

Two weeks ago, her aunt Millie Williams, back in her small hometown, called to set her up on a blind date. Millie
described the guy as the grandson of Mrs. Alice Sullivan, their neighbor. Apparently, he was a straight-A student,
graduated from a top university in Chicago, landed a high-paying job with great benefits, and even got bonuses
on holidays
She'd verbally agreed, intending to blow it off later. But that night, he called. He said he didn't have tfor
dating, and even less for a relationship. If she agreed, he wanted to skip all that and marry her. "Crazy guy,"
she'd thought.
But he hadn't given her a chance to refuse. He just said she could think about it and then hung up.
The truth was, she hadn't thought about it for the past two weeks. Yet, tonight, she said yes.
She opened her phone and checked the trending news. It was still a whirlwind.
A-list actress, Seraphina West, was rumored to be pregnant, and the father was a married, Oscar-winning actor.
Shortly after Seraphina was branded a "home-wrecker," the heir to the Jennings family, Julian Jennings, stepped
forward, proclaiming himself Seraphina's boyfriend and the father of her child. He announced their impending
nuptials.
Despite considerable skepticism, he released a video of him proposing to Seraphina at her recent birthday party.
He went down on one knee, asking her to marry him.
Public opinion swung wildly; fans and the public alike sent their well-wishes.
The top trending topic remained: Seraphina West's Impending Wedding to Julian Jennings. Sonya found the whole
thing darkly ironic.
If Seraphina was Julian's girlfriend, what was she? What were those eight years they'd spent together? She'd
been a fool, and she was finally cutting her losses.

Chapter 1 My Boxfiend's Getting M
She decided to marry Henry Sullivan because he'd once said, 'l want a life with my wife like most ordinary
couples-mutual support, respect, and growing old together."
It was simple, but that was exactly the life she wanted, a life Julian wouldn't give her. After collecting herself, she
packed her stuff. The mansion was Julian's; she needed to leave. She had an early shift, so she only slept for a
couple of hours.
As she went downstairs, she saw Julian sprawled on the couch. His hair was a mess, and he was frowning. He'd
obviously overdone it last night and was hungover.
She ignored him and went to the kitchen to make breakfast.
While boiling water for noodles, Julian stumbled in, reeking of alcohol. He wrapped his arms. around her from
behind, his chin resting on her shoulder.
"Ugh, my head's killing me. Makeshangover soup."
Sonya frowned. Go sit down for a minute."
He mumbled with his eyes closed, "I just want to hold you for a bit."
"You smell awful."
"Do I?" He sniffed himself."Okay, I'll go shower first."

The preparation was complex and time-consuming, requiring constant attention. Stirring the broth, she chuckled
bitterly. Eight years of tending to him, warming his stomach, but never his heart.
Well, this last act of care would be a period to her eight-year love.
When Julian cdown after his shower, Sonya placed a steaming bowl of soup in front of him. He to talk about

"Congratulations," Sonya said, breaking the silence.
Julian looked up, his handsface slightly puzzled."Congratulations on what?"
"Congratulations on finally getting Miss West to say yes after all these years of proposing to her, on her
birthday," Sonya said calmly.
She'd always known Julian loved Seraphina. It had been 15 years, from junior high to now. Every year on
Seraphina's birthday, he proposed to her, even during their eight years together. Did she not care?
Of course she did!
But she loved Julian too much
much that she chose to ignore her own feelings.
Julian frowned. "You saw the news?"
Sonya looked at him, silent.
Julian nodded, matter-of-factly. "Seraphina and | are getting a fake marriage. We'll divorce once. the scandal dies
down."
"A fake marriage?" Sonya laughed incredulously. "Will you guys get a marriage license and have a
wedding?"

"Of course. Our families wouldn't approve otherwise."
"So, how is that a fake marriage?"
"It is what it is. You don't need to know the details." Julian drank the soup, stood up, and started. towards the
stairs.
"We need to talk."
Julian turned back."Talk what?"
Sonya took a deep breath."l think we should break up."

Sonya lowered her gaze."Whether your marriage to Seraphina is real or fake, we're done."
"Sonya!"
"I'm tired," Sonya closed her eyes. "Eight years of loving you has drained me. Let's just end this." "Fine. Don't
regret it!"
Julian didn't go upstairs. He grabbed his coat and stormed out.
It was over. A wave of relief washed over Sonya.
She was an OB-GYN at the city
hospital. She started her shift,
listening to a PADRE

"They say he's so devoted, he's been pining after her for fifteen years! Fifteen years! Even God must be

Sonya didn't want to hear this. She sent Ashley to take a pregnant patient upstairs. But just as she found some
peace, Julian called.
"Prepare yourself. Seraphina's coming to your hospital for a prenatal check-up tomorrow."
