The car stopped under Jolene’s apartment building. When the door opened, Bradley roughly threw Esther and her
groceries out.
Esther found herself on the ground, watching apples and oranges rolling in every direction. She then looked back at
Bradley in the car.
Bradley’s silhouette remained in the darkness. Esther couldn’t see his face, but he felt like a ruthless demon from
hell. He stayed put, but it seemed like he held her life in his hands.
The car door slammed shut loudly, and it drove away. Esther bent down to collect the scattered items, putting them
back in the bags.
The apartment’s concierge rushed over to help. “Madam, let me assist you.”
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtEsther softly replied, “Thank you.”
They entered the elevator, and Esther fixed her hair using the elevator’s light reflection.
The concierge rang the doorbell smoothly, and an impatient voice came from inside. “Who’s there?”
Esther croaked, “It’s me.”
The door opened, and Esther entered, groceries in tow. Jolene followed like a curious sister, watching as Esther
stocked the fridge.
“You didn’t have to buy these. I don’t cook,” Jolene said.
Esther said gently, “You’re pregnant. Eating takeout all the time isn’t good for you.”
Jolene asked curiously, “Why are you being so nice to me? After all, I’m carrying your fiance’s child.”
Esther couldn’t reveal that her engagement to Chadwick was part of a scheme.
“When I was pregnant before, I was in prison. I didn’t have proper nutrition, and the environment was bad. I had a
premature and difficult birth.”
Esther made breakfast in the kitchen, blending apples and berries.
Seeing Esther in the same clothes from the night before, Jolene asked softly, “Would you like to shower and
change?”
“Is that okay?”
Jolene replied gently, “Of course.”

Jolene told Esther excitedly, “Feel free to pick anything. Some still have the tags on. Wait, I’ll get them for you.”
Jolene handed Esther a set of girlish underwear. “How about this set? You’re quite slim. It should fit.
“Why don’t you shower first? I’ll find you some comfy clothes. Oh, I remember I bought a cartoon T-shirt set!”
Jolene took charge, selecting an outfit for Esther, who remained motionless. She then guided her to the guest
bathroom. “Go on.”

Esther looked at her reflection in the bathroom mirror. It revealed an exhausted woman with a light in her eyes that
had somehow dimmed. Instead, melancholy had taken over.
She began to undress and stepped into the shower. Gazing at the marks Bradley had deliberately left on her, she
couldn’t help but cry, the sound drowned by the running water.
She applied shower gel to her skin and scrubbed herself repeatedly. Her once porcelain-like skin now bore
numerous long, red marks, and some sensitive areas even had faint traces of blood.
After her shower, Esther washed her hair.
