"So | can't, but Kenneth can?" Everett furrowed his brow, his eyes not missing a beat of her emotional fluctuations.
She mused for a few seconds but didn't answer the question. Instead, she countered, "My mom insisted on me bringing a boyfriend to see her this time, or she wouldn't have surgery. | brought Kenneth, thinking I could fool her, but she suddenly demanded that Kenneth's parents come to the hospital immediately! If | had brought you instead, could your parents have come?" The answer was a big no of course.
Both of them were well aware.

But Everett didn't say another word.
He buttoned up his shirt before she could apply the medicine, and left the room straight away.
Dorothy could only sigh as she watched his retreating figure.
She hoped that Everett could keep his possessiveness over Heather in the future! She also wished he could realize that she was not Heather but just a low-status stand-in.
Everett never came back after he left. Dorothy washed her face and sat back down at her desk to work.
Around six in the evening, Kevin came knocking.
"Give me the parts you've checked and you've got three days for the rest! Since you don't need to leave the hotel, try to do as much as you can. I'll mention your contributions to Mr. Lopez when the time comes." Dorothy gave him a thumbs up, but there was something she didn't understand.
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏm"Kevin, why did you bring me to Lumina Bay if you guys don't need me to tag along for meetings or due diligence?" He could have just emailed these documents to her and she could have checked them at the main office. She was brought all the way to Lumina Bay, but she didn't even need to step out of the hotel! "It was Mr. Lopez's decision. | don't know the specifics. He might have other uses for you." "Mr. Lopez's decision?" "Yeah! I'm just a secretary; no matter how important | am, | can't decide who gets to join the project.” Dorothy frowned slightly, "He asked for me specifically?" "Uh-huh." Kevin nodded. He was puzzled about this too, "But | think he might feel sorry for you. He knows that you've had a tough time in the investment banking world and wants to help you out a bit! If you are in Lumina Bay, your contribution could be recognized more legitimately.” So that's it. He felt sorry for her.
"Dorothy, don't overthink it. In our line of work, performance is what speaks. It doesn't matter where you come from; it's not like we're choosing a crown princess! Mr. Lopez always appreciates those who are serious and responsible at work. He's probably looking out for you because he sees potential in you." She smiled, "He and | were classmates so he knew all about my family situation back in middle school. | don't have much to think about. Instead, | should be thanking Mr. Lopez!" After Kevin left, Dorothy returned to her room, feeling a little empty inside.
She couldn't quite put her finger on why.
She picked up her phone, thought for a while, and sent a message to Karen.
[Do you think the stronger a man's possessiveness, the more he loves the woman?] Everett was even getting jealous over her as Heather's stand-in.
Karen replied almost instantly.
[Of course! Isn't that obvious? The two are directly proportional! He must be crazy in love!]
