Kenneth felt a surge of sorrow as his fingers brushed against Dorothy's icy, lifeless skin.
"Are you all alone?" He wanted to ask where her boyfriend was. He wasn't here with her? However, Kenneth didn't voice the latter part, but the look on Dorothy's face confirmed his suspicions.
Although he didn't know the details, he was certain he wouldn't abandon her in such a trying time, even if she tried to push him away.
"My mom... She was murdered.” Instead of answering Kenneth's question, Dorothy simply muttered, "Someone killed her... I'm sure of it." "Do you know who it was?" Kenneth quickly asked. "Tell me, and I'll help you find out. If someone really did kill your mother, | won't let them get away with it." Dorothy slowly lifted her gaze to meet his eyes.

"What if... it was someone from the Lopez family? Can we even find out?" She was scared. Scared of what they might discover if they dug too deep. What if it was Everett's parents who orchestrated it all? Even if they could prove it, would they stand a chance against the mighty Lopez family? Her mother's words echoed in her mind, hitting her with a harsh reality that they were outmatched in every possible way. The Lopez family could crush them like a bug without breaking a sweat. How could she possibly fight back? Was she relying on Everett? How naive she had been! It was his parents they were up against, not some random adversaries. And now she was stuck between him and his family.
What about the baby she was carrying? The weight of it all was too much for her to bear. She felt like her mind was clogged. It was too hard for her to process the enormity of their situation.
"The Lopez family? The Lopez Corporation?" Kenneth's eyes widened in shock. "But you and Everett..." "They don't approve us." "I'll go talk to them right now! Don't worry, Dorothy, I've got your back.” Kenneth turned to leave, but Dorothy weakly grabbed the hem of his shirt.
He looked back at her and noticed that her face was pale and drained of color as she slowly shook her head.
"Don't go." "But..." "I'm just guessing. | have no proof." Kenneth frowned. "What about Everett? He should be here, explaining things to you! Even if the Lopez family isn't behind this, he should be by your side!" Dorothy lowered her gaze. "I can't reach him now." Kenneth fell silent with shock.
"You should go too. Don't worry about me; I'm just... struggling to accept everything right now. But | know | have to be strong.
There's so much waiting for me." She had no family left in this world. There was no one to help her deal with the aftermath of her mother's death. She couldn't even fathom what to do with the hospital procedures and everything else.
Dorothy knew how hard this was going to be.
She was even rational enough to not drag Kenneth into this mess with her.
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏm"How can | leave you alone in the hospital at a time like this?" Kenneth was even more heartbroken to see Dorothy trying to put on a brave face.
He wished that she would let it all out, cry, scream, and even lash out in anger.
Just anything but this painful silence and eerie calmness.
"You don't owe me anything.” Dorothy refused his accompany.
"Even as a friend, | can't leave you alone!" Kenneth took a deep breath. "Let me stay with you until you get in touch with Everett, okay?" Dorothy remained silent.
Kenneth frowned. "Dorothy, I'm begging you! Let me stay with you, okay?"
