Inside Amanda's VIP hospital suite, there was a constant stream of doctors popping in to check on her, each one leaving with a sigh of resignation.
Everett, who had been standing vigil by his mother's side, was visibly anxious. If it weren't for his reluctance to worsen his parents’ opinion of Dorothy, he would have been long gone.
When the chief physician entered and left the room for the third time, Everett couldn't contain his frustration anymore.

"I would've told you if she'd responded." Jonathan replied, pulling out his phone as proof.
Suddenly, Everett rose to his feet, heading for the door.
"Where are you going?" Jonathan quickly intercepted him.
"To smoke a cigarette.” "I'll join you." Everett furrowed his eyebrows as he glanced at his father. "Can you leave mom alone here?" "We have nurses, and she won't be waking up anytime soon. | need some fresh air too." "I need to borrow your phone then." Before Jonathan could protest, Everett added, "I need to give Kevin some instructions. I've been away from the office for too long; | can't be out of touch.” After a brief moment of thought, Jonathan agreed and handed over his phone.
The father-son duo exited the room, and once they were out of earshot, Everett dialed Kevin. Jonathan, now somewhat at ease, lit up a cigarette.
Once the call connected, Everett quickly gave out a clear and concise order. "Get a new phone delivered to the hospital, and contact Dorothy immediately. If something has happened to her, | need to know." "Understood, Mr. Lopez." After ending the call, Everett checked his father's messages for any from Dorothy, even scouring the blocked contact list. He suspected his father might have blocked Dorothy's number, hence their lack of communication.
But Dorothy's number wasn't on the blocked list.

This realization should have reassured him, yet he felt like something didn't sit right. A feeling of unease kept nagging at him as a knot grew in his stomach.
"Finished with your call?" "Yeah." Everett handed back the phone.
Jonathan offered him a cigarette, but Everett declined.
After a moment of silence, Everett spoke, his tone firm and resolute. "Dad, | know you and Mom won't like me saying this, but in my life, it's Dorothy or no one." "You're young; how can you determine who you will be with for life? There are thousands of women better than her; you're just being stubborn. Your mom and | like Heather for a reason that she can help with your career; she's respectful, and your mom adores her. Everyone would be happy if you just agreed. Why are you going against us?" "I've told you. | only want Dorothy." "Are you certain that Dorothy wants only you?" Everett frowned. "Of course.” "I doubt it. There's this guy named Kenneth around her. Have you heard of him?" Jonathan pulled out some pictures on his phone, all of them showing Kenneth accompanying Bella. "Look for yourself. This Dorothy already has a backup plan. When your mom and | objected, her mother started looking for new suitors. Everett, don't let her fool you."
