Before Lane could utter a word, Dorothy flatly rejected him.

He guessed that Dorothy hadn't shared her history with Everett with anyone else. He didn't know why, but he was sure she had her reasons and that they were enough to make her listen to him.
"What are you two talking about?" Lane asked as his eyes darted between Dorothy and Jeffrey.
Jeffrey smiled and said, “You might not know this, but Ms. Sanchez used to be involved with...” “Enough!” Dorothy cut him off sharply and turned her gaze to Jeffrey. “We can talk, but let's go over there." Jeffrey gave an 'OK’ gesture with his hand. "Lane, you go ahead. Don't worry, I'll make sure she comes for dinner." Lane had no idea what was going on.
He looked at Dorothy. Since she did not protest, he could only nod. "Okay, I'll wait for you." As he turned and disappeared into the restaurant, Dorothy spoke in a cold voice, "Mr. Turner, | recall we have no quarrel. The Lopez family and Heather wanted me to stay away from Everett, and | did. Why are you here threatening me?" Jeffrey pulled out a pack of cigarettes and lit one. "I'm just wondering how you got involved with Lane.” The word ‘involved’ had a certain implication.

Dorothy clenched her fists as her nails dug into her flesh. "My relationship with him is purely professional. If you think there's a problem, he can fire me. If you're here just to humiliate me, Mr. Turner, then please get to the point. | have work to do." Jeffrey took a drag from his cigarette and grinned. "Why would | humiliate you? I'm just curious. You had Everett wrapped around your finger, and now Lane seems quite taken with you. And yet you marry some nobody. Is this some kind of game? Dorothy, what's your real agenda?" He could only assume that Dorothy was back for revenge.
Even though she obediently left Everett behind and didn't pursue the truth behind her mother's death, Jeffrey had a hunch that Dorothy wasn't so easy to get rid of. She didn't want money or power, so what was her real motive? Would she want to come back and reclaim everything one day? "So, what are you afraid of? Why are you standing here and questioning me?" Instead of answering, Dorothy threw the question back at him.
Exactly! What was he afraid of? And what were the Lopez family and Heather afraid of? If they hadn't done anything wrong, if they were truly innocent, why be afraid of her return? Jeffrey was speechless. He hadn't expected Dorothy, after so many years, to have honed her wit and become deadly sharp.
"I know you're a good friend of Everett's, and you want him to be with Heather. But all of that has nothing to do with me now. As for your question, all | can tell you is that my goal is not to get back with Everett.” Jeffrey's cigarette ash fell to the ground, narrowly missing his hand.
He squinted at the woman standing before him. "Did you know he's getting married?" "I know." "And you don't care?" "lI don't."
