Everett remembered Kevin mentioning that Karen had a baby girl. He guessed that the tiny hand in the photo belonged to her.
It made sense, especially considering Karen and Dorothy were closer than blood sisters. It was only natural for Dorothy to share photos of Karen's daughter.
Like a man possessed, Everett scrolled down and clicked on every picture. He even clicked on those related to her work, as if, by doing so, he could understand more about her life in the past four years.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtIt was clear that Dorothy was busy with work. Her Twitter feed was minimal, and personal updates were even scarcer.
He exited the app, only to see that Dorothy had replied to his message.
[Okay, I'll cooperate as much as | can.] Everett stared at the message for a moment before he quickly dialed Kevin's number.
"The driver helped me in Everglow City, are you able to get in touch with him?" "I can try. Let me find his number, and I'll get back to you.” Kevin didn’t fully understand what he meant, but he would do as asked.
A minute after hanging up, Kevin called back. “Mr. Lopez, | managed to contact the driver, but he’s not in Everglow City anymore.
He's out of town. If you need a driver, | can find you another one.” Kevin assumed Mr. Lopez was planning another trip to Everglow City.
Everett frowned. “Tell him to return to Everglow City in three days and stay put.” “Alright. Would you like me to book a flight for you to Everglow City in three days?” “I'm not going.” Kevin was a bit confused.
“Give me the driver's number. I'll talk to him.” Kevin hesitated before agreeing. “Alright.” He had no idea why a random driver in Everglow City would be given the opportunity to speak directly to Mr. Lopez. What could they possibly have to discuss? Kevin sent the number over, and Everett dialed it immediately.
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmThe driver picked up quickly. "Hello?" There was a hint of an Everglow City accent in his voice.
"This is Everett." The driver was taken aback but quickly responded, "Mr. Lopez, | remember. Is there a problem?" "I'l have someone contact you to record a voice changer system." Everett paused. "Five million dollars. I'l have it sent to you immediately.” Five million dollars?! That was more money than most people would ever see in their lifetime.
The driver was taken aback by his generous offer. With so many scams these days, he couldn't help but be suspicious.
"Do you need it for something specific?" "You don't need to know." "But I'm worried." Everett frowned. "What do you have that you're afraid of being scammed?" "Well, nothing really. | just wanted to know what the purpose of the recording would be." "Do you remember the car | asked you to hit? | want to talk to the owner myself." The driver caught on quickly. "You don't want to use your own voice?" "Correct." "I understand! I'll cooperate fully." After hanging up, Everett instructed Kevin to get started on the arrangement right away.
Everything was set. He glanced at the phone on his desk, which still displayed the conversation with Dorothy.
His lips tightened. Everett felt like he was betraying himself.
Was this what it meant to give up? His steadfast nature, which had never wavered over the years, was crumbling in every situation that had something to do with Dorothy.
