Dorothy instinctively glanced in the direction he pointed.
Sure enough, Kenneth stood not far away, phone in hand, smiling at her. "Over here!" Seeing Kenneth's figure, Dorothy's heart was filled with indescribable emotions.
It would be a lie to say she wasn't touched at all, but this kind of emotion felt more like familial affection, unrelated to romance.
Many times, Dorothy had thought, if she hadn't met Everett first, but had been paired up with Kenneth through Karen's matchmaking, she'd most likely be committed to living a life with him! But all these assumptions were based on the condition that Everett didn't exist.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtDorothy stood up, slowly walking towards him, "Kenneth, why haven't you left?" "I just couldn't bear the thought of you being alone in Eldorria City, so | had my friend take Karen and the kids and leave first! You don’t have to worry, because the friend who is driving them is an old classmate of mine; they'll be safe and he won't betray us.” Dorothy wasn’t concerned about that, but...
"You just stood here waiting?" "| stayed primarily to be with you." Kenneth spoke without a hint of complaint, his voice gentle and warm, "Are you done now? Let's go." Dorothy nodded, following Kenneth.
The wind was getting stronger, and rain seemed imminent, specially in the summer, when rain came without notice.
"Shall we find a place to stay first, and continue our journey tomorrow morning?" Dorothy suggested.
Kenneth paused, then turned around smiling, "Sounds good! You don’t seem to be in the best mood today; it would be perfect to find a hotel, take a nice bath, get a good sleep, and then we can hit the road when you wake up naturally! And don’t worry about the kids; they love Karen and will be obedient.” Dorothy merely nodded, managing a forced smile.
From her sudden urge to leave to her change of heart to wait till tomorrow, Kenneth could probably guess what was going on.
But he also felt he had no right to say anything.
And more importantly, truth be told, he genuinely hoped Dorothy would be happy. Nothing else mattered.
Kenneth led Dorothy to a high-end hotel, then booked two adjacent rooms.
"This hotel has very comfortable beds; I've stayed here before on business trips. Rest well, and just give me a shout when you're ready to leave tomorrow." Dorothy nodded, "Thank you." "No need for thanks! Now off you go." Kenneth watched Dorothy enter her room, then entered his and stood by the door.

It must've been Dorothy leaving again.
Kenneth's thin lips twitched into a bitter smile.
Dorothy had gone to find Everett.
More accurately, she went to visit Bay Residence.
That place held all their cherished memories, and was where she first felt truly valued and treasured.
Growing up, her mother loved her, but her love was always extreme, more about control! She never considered whether her daughter could handle it, only wanting to prevent her from going down the same path she did.
Karen loved her, but that was a friendship. Karen had her own family to love, her own life, her social circle, and wouldn't prioritize her best friend above all else.
Only Everett, he truly took the time to get to know her and cared for her with extreme caution, afraid of any slight oversight.
