The piercing sound of car alarms left Everett's ears throbbing.
"Jeffrey, Jeffrey!" Everett called out, but received only silence in response.
Something was wrong.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtEverett hastily dialed Kevin's number, instructing him to find out where an accident had occurred on the route to Bay Residence.
Langston, sitting next to him, was already a step ahead. He pointed to his phone screen, "It's likely on Labor Avenue; there's a massive traffic jam there." Everett glanced at him, nodding without hesitation. "Stay at home. I'll give you access to the Lopez Corporation systems. Don't leave until I'm back." Langston nodded. This wasn't the time to cause trouble. "Alright." By the time Everett arrived on the scene, Jeffrey had already been rushed to the hospital.
Everett headed straight for the hospital, where he found Heather standing outside the emergency room. Her makeup was smeared from crying, and she seemed unable to stand without the support of the wall.
"Everett...you're finally here! How could something like this happen to Jeffrey?" Everett's gaze first landed on the glaring red light of the emergency room before shifting to Heather.
"Who called to inform you?" Jeffrey was on the phone with him when the accident occurred. There's no way he could've contacted Heather! Caught off guard by his question, Heather momentarily forgot to continue crying. But she was a seasoned liar, quick on her feet.
"The hospital called me. They must've thought | was a relative since my number was on top of his contact list." Everett narrowed his eyes. He didn't believe a word Heather said.
Seeing his silence, Heather felt a pang of guilt and quickly changed the subject. "Everett, do you think something bad will happen to Jeffrey? He was just working at the office, then suddenly, he's in an accident! | was so shocked when | got the call!" "Get in touch with his parents." Everett cut her off, not interested in her theatrics.
"Right... forgot in all the panic! I'll call them now!" Heather turned away, heading towards a corner.
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmEverett watched her, swiping his phone screen a few times.
Before long, Heather returned, a look of worry on her face. "Jeffrey's parents aren't answering their phones! What should we do?" As she spoke, she looked up to see Jeffrey's father's number displayed on Everett's phone, clearly in a call.
Everett calmly relayed the situation to Jeffrey's father, then turned to Heather.
"You are involved in Jefferey’s accident.” "What...how could that be? Jeffrey has been so kind to me, so | would never harm him! We're friends!" "Then why did you choose not to notify the Turners? You didn't even try to call his parents.” If she had, his call should've gone to voicemail, not connected.
Heather hadn't expected Everett to trap her at every turn. "I... | just dialed the wrong number in my panic!" "I've already called the police. You can explain to them." He had no desire to engage with her any longer.
Heather stepped forward, trying to touch his arm, but Everett stepped away.
Her fists clenched, then suddenly relaxed. She laughed softly, "Do you despise me this much? Well, let me tell you something! Weren't you searching everywhere to find out who that little boy’s parents are? I'll reveal it to you - he’s our child!"
