After dinner, Kenneth dropped the girls back at their place, made sure the door was locked, and then took off in his car.
Dorothy was completely wiped out. She took a bath and hit the hay.
She had a restless night, curling up like a shrimp, clutching her blanket tightly.
In the morning, she was startled awake by the alarm clock.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtStaring at the unfamiliar ceiling, it took her a moment to remember she was crashing at Karen's place.
She got dressed and cleaned up.
Karen finally emerged from her room, phone in hand, "Just hang on a second. I've ordered breakfast on my phone. We can eat and then head to work together.” Dorothy glanced at the time, "No can do. the Lopez Corporation is a trek from here. | have to dash for the subway now! | can't grab breakfast with you." "Just take a cab then! It won't break the bank." Karen blurted out but then realized Dorothy was too frugal to splurge on a cab when there was a cheaper subway option.
"No worries. | can grab a bite at lunch. | have to go now. See you later." She grabbed her laptop and bag and headed out the door. It was her first day commuting from here to the Lopez Corporation, and she fumbled a bit with the route.
Luckily, she left early and didn’t clock in late at the Lopez Corporation.
“Morning.” As soon as she got to the office, she saw Kevin at the door with a bag in his hand.
“You look like you've skipped breakfast, am I right?” Dorothy grinned, “I'm not hungry. I'll eat at lunch.” "Here, | bought extra. Try this strawberry toast from this place.” Kevin put the bag on her desk.
"No way. Their stuff is pricey!" "That's why | can't bear to chuck it. It's perfect for you to munch on.” Kevin dropped that line, ignored her protests, and took the elevator back to his office.
Dorothy reluctantly sat down and opened the fancy bag.
Toast from L&H Bakery Company cost more than a hundred bucks a slice! And Kevin was about to toss half a bag of it? She looked at the toast in her hand, and a thought suddenly popped into her head. “Could it be that Everett had Kevin buy it for me?” But the next second, she shook off that thought! No way! Lately, she had been quite the daydreamer.
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmDorothy turned to her computer, munched on her toast while tidying up the data, and sent it to legal for review.
After the morning meeting, she checked her inbox but there was still no reply on the review.
Usually, that would have been ample time for legal to look it over.
Dorothy dialed the internal line to legal, and a familiar female voice answered, "Hello, Ms. Sanchez. Ms. Heather went on a business trip with Mr. Lopez yesterday, so she can't sign and stamp the documents now. I'll let her know. She should review it when she sees it." "Oh." So, they were on a business trip together.
"Didn't Ms. Heather just have surgery?" She remembered it was Everett who took Heather to the hospital.
"Yes, but Ms. Heather is really dedicated! A true chief lawyer of the Lopez Corporation.” That time Dorothy was sure she heard correctly.
Ha, she just couldn't let it go and had to probe further! She hung up, rubbed her forehead, and her gaze landed on the bag of toast on her desk.
She had actually fancied the idea that perhaps Everett had asked Kevin to get the toast for her. Wasn't that a laugh riot?
