About to meet Everett, huh? Dorothy couldn't quite put into words how she was feeling at that time. It was like hanging in mid-air, not knowing whether to go up or down.
Part of her wanted to find an excuse to bail, but then again, why run? After all, she and Everett had to sort things out sooner or later, be it breaking up or whatever. They were bound to cross paths eventually.
Kevin had given his instructions and left, which left Dorothy unable to focus on work the rest of the afternoon. Her mind was preoccupied with the upcoming evening meeting.

Dorothy quickly headed over, "What brings you guys here?" "| figured the head office is far from my place, and Kenneth here was free, so | asked him to give us a ride." "No need. | can just take the subway." Karen looped her arm through Dorothy's affectionately, giggling, "I just wanted to spend more time with you! When we were at the Prosperity Consortium, we could see each other every day. Now that you're here, I've got no one to chat with!" Dorothy was left speechless by Karen's antics, and she simply shrugged and replied, "Then you better buckle down and work hard. Mr. Percy has been too busy to bother you lately, but come year-end, he'll be all over your performance.” "Scared of him?" Karen rolled her eyes tically, "And if he does, I'll just quit! I've had enough of his way of doing things. He’s always trying to grab the glory but blaming others when things go wrong." Karen wasn't under pressure to earn money. Her family didn't depend on it.
But things were different for Dorothy.
Kenneth, who had been silent all that while, chimed in, "That's just how it is in the workplace these days. Not just in your company, even among teaching staff and principals.” "Do you get bullied by your principal too?" "No way. He wouldn't dare.” Kenneth's reputation and status at school meant the principal wouldn't dare to act recklessly towards him.
Karen smirked, "Enough chit-chat. Let's go and grab some grub. I'm starving!" With that, she tried to pull Dorothy along.
"I have a meeting at eight, and | need to prepare some documents now, so | can't join you." She did have work to do, but also, she didn't want to spend too much time with Kenneth outside of work. She knew he was a good guy and could guess what he was trying to imply, but at least for the time being, Dorothy didn't have the energy or the heart to deal with romantic issues.
Especially considering her current situation with Everett, which was still up in the air. She couldn't afford any further complications.
"Huh? You're still working after hours?" Karen's face fell.
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmShe had been hoping to help her best friend and Kenneth get closer.
"Yeah, | have a lot on my plate. It's a good thing, in any case. | want to earn more money so that my mom can have a stable place to live after she gets discharged from the hospital.” She could handle renting a place on her own, but her mom was a different story. If she encountered a difficult landlord, she might not have been able to cope.
Karen was about to argue some more when Kenneth beat her to it.
"Let me take you home, then. After that, I'll take Karen out for dinner.” "No, really. I'll just take the subway." "Stop turning us down! You're making Kenneth feel awkward." Karen's words made it clear that if Dorothy refused again, she'd be making things uncomfortable for everyone.
"All right then. Thanks for the ride, Mr. Nelson."
